Asia-Euro Policy Dialogue Fellowship Program 2017

The AEPD Fellowship Program is purported to promote intellectual exchanges among ASEAN, Europe and Japan, and also to provide opportunities for building and strengthening a wide range of communications among those regions.

The Fellowship Program is presented to all motivated researchers and policy makers, and AEPD has now started accepting the application for 2017 Fellowship Program.

According to the plan for this fiscal year, four (4) fellows (i.e., two fellows from ASEAN, one fellow from Europe and one fellow from Japan) are to be selected, and they are expected to complete their research objectives by means of visiting and staying at two non-home regions for one month each.

As economic integration progresses globally, Southeast Asia as a region is increasingly vulnerable both to economic shocks in globalizing world and to intensifying great power rivalries.

This is also a region of dynamic economic growth while the economic progress can be seriously threatened by political uncertainties across the world.

As democratization progresses, this is a region of governments pressed to accommodate wider political participation and improve political legitimacy by better demonstrating accountability and respecting human rights.

Meanwhile, both Europe and Japan, experiencing similar global challenges, had gone through waves of policy challenges whereby accumulating lessons in policy areas such as trade and macro-economy, social safety net and health, environment, energy and disaster risk reduction.

In short, the lessons learned by Europe and Japan have a degree of applicability to ASEAN contexts if operationalization of such lessons is possible.

Given this background, this trilateral policy research project Asia-Euro Policy Dialogue (AEPD) aims to strengthen exchanges on Southeast Asia’s current reality and beyond among ASEAN countries, Europe and Japan.

In particular, this research project attempts to increase awareness on the political and economic importance of Southeast Asia for international community and operationalize the policy lessons for ASEAN countries from experiences, both positive and negative, that Europe and Japan have had.

The purpose of the Policy Forum is as part of AEPD to provide an opportunity for prominent researchers and policy-makers to exchange views and opinions on the variety of policy areas and disseminate widely such views and opinions in order to contribute to better understanding of the region and to provide concrete inputs to policy making in Southeast Asia, Europe and Japan.

There will be participants from Southeast Asia, Europe, and Japan, as well as regional partners such as China, Australia and the United States.

The Fellowship aims to encourage policy and intellectual exchanges among follows from each region. It is hoped that the Fellowship will provide deeper and wider networking opportunities to the fellows.

Selection decision is the responsibility of the Steering Committee. The number of the fellows is envisioned to be a few from each region annually for the duration of 2 months, depending on the availability of funding.
