UNICEF is looking for an intern to assist the Data and Analytics section with regards to data compilation and analysis, research and data visualization.
Internship overview
The intern will primarily support the areas of adolescent wellbeing and harmful traditional practices, with the potential for some work in other areas of child protection.
As effective programming must be grounded in robust data and evidence to demonstrate results, the research and analysis generated through this internship will help broaden the evidence base on the issues of child marriage, female genital mutilation, and all domains of adolescent wellbeing to inform programme and policy interventions.
This work will be in support of UNICEF’s mission and objectives in the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan, which includes indicators in these areas in its results framework.
The selected intern will primarily collaborate and interact with UNICEF staff in the Data Analysis Unit of D&A.
The primary activities undertaken by the Data Analysis Unit within D&A include compiling data, methodological development, global monitoring and reporting, analyzing data for evidence-based policy and programming and capacity-building.
UNICEF’s work in the area of data analysis highlights trends and emphasizes patterns found within the data and suggests how these data can be used strategically to inform programmatic efforts.
How can you make a difference?
- The intern is expected to provide operational and technical assistance from amongst the following representative activities.
- Support the development of a data visualization dashboard on child protection, through data compilation and cleaning, review of prototypes and designs, and fact-checking of final product.
- Contribute to a publication launching the Adolescent Country Tracker, through data compilation, data analysis and interpretation, and logistics of publication production.
- Support the re-development of the adolescent content of the UNICEF Data website, including advising on the structure of content, and supporting sector focal points in re-working narrative and charts to be adolescent-specific.
- Contribute to an analysis on intra-household opinions towards female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), and the relationship between the opinions of parents and FGM/C status of their daughters.
- Support new analysis on child marriage in conflict-affected settings.
- Support for data compilation, data analysis, and data visualization in other areas of child protection, including in particular the launch of a new website on child marriage.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:
- Enrolment in an undergraduate (Bachelor’s), Master’s, graduate or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years with study in a relevant field, such as demography, social sciences, statistics, or international health and development
- Excellent academic performance, as demonstrated by academic records
- Strong skills in data analysis, interpretation of findings, and presentation of results
- Excellent project management, time management and communication skills
- Previous experience working with data from household surveys is desirable
- Familiarity with UNICEF mandate and the Sustainable Development Goals preferred
- Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset
Salary
In accordance with UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of US $1,500 per month for full-time work; part-time internship will be paid accordingly.
There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas. If relocating to New York, the intern may receive up to a $1000 lump-sum as a contribution towards travel costs.
