New York Times Summer Internships 2017

The New York Times offers 10-week summer internships to undergraduate and graduate college students who have decided on careers in journalism. Some internships are limited to seniors or graduate students; others also accept juniors. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Overview

Types of internships

James Reston Reporting Fellowship

Up to four college students are selected as James Reston Reporting Fellows. Only seniors or graduate students who have had at least one previous summer internship at a major news organization are considered.

Interns are assigned to various news departments, typically Metro, Business, Sports or Science or the Washington bureau. They get reporting assignments and bylines on their stories.

David E. Rosenbaum Reporting Internship

The Times and the Washington Press Club Foundation select an exceptional intern to report and write across a wide variety of subject areas in the Washington bureau during a 10-week summer internship.

The position, which is co-sponsored by the foundation, is intended for aspiring reporters with a demonstrated interest in or aptitude for writing about government and policy.

It is aimed at students who receive financial aid and who hope to become print journalists in Washington. Applicants must be college seniors or graduate students with previous daily newspaper experience.

Thomas Morgan Visual Journalism Internships

Thomas Morgan Internship is the visual journalism program, covering graphics, art design, page design and photography. It is open to those in their junior year in college or higher.

Material on paper sent separately is acceptable and should be addressed to:

Richard G. Jones
Associate Editor
The New York Times
620 Eighth Avenue
New York, NY 10018

The Dow Jones News Fund Copy Editing Internship

The copy editing internship program is coordinated through the Dow Jones News Fund Copy Editing program and is open to juniors and higher.

During the 10-week internship at The Times, the editing intern is assigned to a major desk in the news department and — under the guidance of the copy desk chief — edits copy and writes headlines. The intern also participates in workshops with ranking editors and reporters.

Audience Development Internship

The audience development internship in the newsroom, working with The Times’s social media editors, is open to juniors and higher.

The audience development intern works with members of the audience development team on analytics, SEO, and social media.

The Interactive News Internship

The interactive news internship, for those who are familiar with one or two front-end or back-end languages and frameworks, involves working alongside developers, designers, and other journalists of The New York Times to build Web applications for coverage of special projects, as well as breaking news. Juniors and higher are eligible to apply.

Prospective interns should have experience with some of the following technologies and an eagerness to learn more while adapting them to the news.

Audio and Video Internships

The audio internship and video internship offer the opportunity to work with the award-winning journalists of The Times’s audio and video units. Juniors and higher are eligible.
