If you have a Skype interview coming up, you are in the right place then.

Now that the Internet has totally banished any trace of space limits, the reality has tried to adapt to this new notion of the modern world.

This means that there’s no need anymore for employers to search for candidates only from the local pool.

Any video chat can replace the expenses of a trip with a good Internet connection. So, let’s take a look at how a winning video interview looks like.

1.     Get your technology ready

Studies show that six out of 10 companies are resorting to video interviews for their recruiting efforts.

The reason behind this is to save up as many resources as possible. Time is one of the most precious resources because of its non-renewable nature. So, the best way to ace that interview is to ensure that there will be no technical problems to waste precious moments on.

So, take your time to check your webcam, microphone, and internet connection.

Make sure the software recommended for the interview will accept your type of devices. Other software might interfere with a quality video call such as your firewall.

The programs that protect you from digital viruses might not recognize the external connections and will consider them a threat.

Ideally, your Internet connection should not rely on Wi-Fi. Make an effort to plug your laptop or computer directly to the router.

Test the quality of your Internet Connection so that there’s no interruption during the interview.

Better yet, ask your roommates or family to disconnect from the Internet during your video call.

2. Set up the room

The discussion will be as comfortable as you are. So, make sure you put on a light outfit that looks professional.

Don’t jeopardize the quality of the interview with an embarrassing situation where the employer finds out you wear pajama pants. Also, it is recommended to avoid white shirts as the fabric may reflect too much light.

The background is important to be plain and uncluttered. The interviewer will perceive your home as one of your representative factors. So, you can win over their trust with a tidy and professional background.

Also, it is best to have your desk clean of any papers or tools. Ensure you have open space to gesticulate and there’s no object in the vicinity you can bump into and create a disturbing sound.

Moreover, the interviewers will have their eyes on you all the time. So, if you thought that you could bit the system and write some cheat sheets or consult Google, think again. It will be obvious that you are reading notes plus all keyboards are making noises.

3. Rehearse

You may think that at a video interview you will do as fine as at any other kind of meeting.

However, this idea might be wrong. The fact is that no matter how good your devices are, they will not be able to record the interview as faithfully as a real meeting can.

You never know how you might react to a video interview. You might be a kind of person that relies too much on non-verbal communication, and you might get confused if you don’t see the interviewer clearly.

This is why it is best to ask a friend to rehearse a video interview with you. Let them prepare some basic questions for you like what are the administrative assistant job duties so as your answers to be genuine and fresh. Make sure you practice until your reactions look natural.

A trick to connect better with your interviewer is to avoid looking at the screen. Instead, you can make eye contact by looking at the camera.

So, you should prepare your technology setup, background, and attitude for a few hours before your video interview. If you take care of all these aspects, you will make a professional first impression.
