Join the World Trade Organization (WTO) in its mission to promote high-quality research on trade policy and international trade cooperation. Help reinforce the relationship between the WTO and the academic community by submitting your paper for the 2024 WTO Essay Award.

The WTO is a global international organization dealing with the trade rules between nations. Its goal is a trade that runs smoothly, predictably, and freely.

The 2024 Essay Award for Young Economists carries a prize of CHF 5,000 to promote high-quality economic research.

Eligibility for the 2024 Essay Award for Young Economists

Applying authors must possess or be in the process of completing a Ph.D. degree. If they are over 30, they must be no more than two years past a Ph.D. defense.

In the case of co-authored papers, this requirement applies to all authors. The prize will be split between the co-authors in the event of winning.

The submitted paper cannot exceed 15,000 words and must address trade policy and international trade cooperation issues.

The winning paper will be officially announced during the largest conference specializing in international trade. European Trade Study Group will host the event and the award ceremony at Athens University in Greece on 12-14 September, 2024. The winning author will receive funding to attend the award ceremony.

Application information

If you decide to give it a go and apply, please send your submission to essay.award@wto.org. All applications need to include two separate files in PDF format:

  • the essay
  • the CV of the author(s) that specifies:
    • current affiliation
    • the academic institution awarding the PhD
    • the year (or the expected year) of the PhD
    • the date of birth of the author(s)
