Eligibility: doctoral students from Germany (who have not yet obtained their PhD) who have at least a Master’s degree in history, the history of religion, and other historical disciplines

IEG Fellowships for Doctoral Students

The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) offers fellowships for doctoral students from Germany at the Institute in Mainz. They are particularly interested in projects that have a cross-border approach, cover topics of intellectual and religious history, or make use of digital tools and methods.

The fellowship offers

  • living and working at the Institute in Mainz for 6–12 months
  • monthly stipend of € 1,350.
  • the possibility of family or child allowance

Moreover, successful candidates are encouraged to be active members of the IEG’s research community and to participate in the weekly colloquia and scholarly activities.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates for the fellowship should have a maximum of three years of their PhD at the time of application.

Fellowship is open to students in history, theology, the history of religion, and other historical disciplines. Moreover, they need to be proficient in English.

Application details

When applying you need to include the following documents:

  • the completed application form 
  • curriculum vitae and a list of publications (if applicable) 
  • an outline of the Ph. D. thesis (up to 15,000 characters excluding footnotes and spaces)
  • the structure of the Ph. D. thesis
  • a detailed timetable for the intended stay at the Institute
  • copies of university transcripts and proof of language competence 

All application materials should be combined in a single PDF file, except for the application form, which needs to be a separate PDF file.

Your documents may be written in English or German, choose the one you feel most proficient at.
