Eligibility: The applicant must present a clear case for how their idea will address one of the three challenges. The applicant must be 18 years of age or older on 1st September 2017, speak English fluently and must be able to attend the Grand Final on Tuesday 5th June 2018. The idea must be able to be applied to the construction industry.
COINS Grand Challenge 2018
The COINS Grand Challenge is a global competition to uncover innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders with ideas that can improve the built environment.

Challenge 1:Â New and emerging technologies
- Undergraduate Competition
What new and emerging technology will have the greatest impact on business in future years and how might those technologies be applied to the built environment, whether during construction or throughout the built life cycle?
To enter the undergraduate competition, applicants must submit an 800-word essay using the official online application form.
- Open Competition
Do you have a viable idea that uses a new or emerging technology to radically reduce costs, increase efficiency or improve sustainability, quality or compliance during construction or throughout the built life cycle?
To enter the open competition, applicants must answer a series of questions contained on the official online application form.
Challenge 2: Leadership
- Undergraduate Competition
What are the major skills, abilities and competencies you would expect to see in a successful leader? Which of these leadership qualities do you believe that you possess and how could you make use of them to add value to the construction industry?
To enter the Undergraduate competition, applicants must submit an 800-word essay or 3-10 minute video about your idea using the official online application form.
- Open Competition
Do you have a specific vision and personal qualities to bring a new approach to leadership within the construction or home building industries?
To enter the Open competition, applicants must answer a series of long-format questions contained on the official online application form.
Prizes
- Barratt Developments: two £2,500 prizes
- Comfort Systems USA: $6,500 cash prize
- DSA Technologies:Â 1 education grant
- Trimble: 4-6 week paid internship
- COINS Software Innovation Prizes:Â The winner will receive a 3-month internship and the runner-up a 2-week work experience placement with COINS research and development to further develop their ideas.
- COINS Investment Prize: COINS is offering a special discretionary COINS Investment Prize to the Open competition winner for what it considers to be the most promising idea or businesses. The winner of the COINS Software Investment Prize will be offered an investment of up to $150,000 (USD) in their business or to set up a business in order to further their idea.
