Eligibility: visionary scientists and entrepreneurial researchers from universities, research organisations, start-ups, high-tech SMEs or industrial stakeholders interested in technological research and innovation.

EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2023

With its Pathfinder programme, the EIC supports exploring bold ideas for radically new technologies. It welcomes the high-risk/high-gain and interdisciplinary, cutting-edge science collaborations that underpin technological breakthroughs.

Pathfinder goes beyond what is already known. Visionary thinking can open up promising avenues towards powerful new technologies.

Grants of up to 3 to 4 million euro support early-stage development of future technologies (e.g. various activities at low Technology Readiness Levels 1-3), up to proof of concept. Pathfinder projects can also receive additional funding to test their research outputs’ innovation potential.

Address these EIC Pathfinder Challenges for a share of EUR 163.5 million

• Clean and efficient cooling

The EIC is looking for breakthroughs in the areas of in-space energy harvesting and transmission and novel propulsion concepts that will use such harvested energy.

• Architecture, Engineering and Construction digitalisation for a novel triad of design, fabrication, and materials

This Challenge seeks to develop research and early innovations with a breakthrough potential related to design, fabrication and materials for the AEC value chain enabled by novel algorithms
and advanced digitalization.

• Precision nutrition

This Challenge will only fund multi-disciplinary research proposals that include at least nutritional, microbiome and glycan research aspects.

• Responsible electronics

This Challenge fosters the development of eco-friendly electronic materials, reducing environmental harm and reducing reliance on scarce resources and harmful chemicals.

• In-space solar energy harvesting for innovative space applications

The EIC is looking for breakthroughs in the areas of in-space energy harvesting and transmission and novel propulsion concepts that will use such harvested energy
