Resilience and Sustainability Science Postdoctoral Fellowship

This fellowship is designed to support up to five postdoctoral researchers conducting independent, interdisciplinary research on the themes of resilience and sustainability. As a Fellow, you will utilize the Smithsonian’s vast resources, including scientists, collections, data sets, and exhibits. You will explore resilience in marine or terrestrial systems, focusing on how these systems interact with the people and communities that rely on them.

  • Term: 24 months (in residence)
  • Stipend: $62,000 per year for Postdoctoral Fellows (prorated for periods less than 24 months)
  • Research Allowance: Up to $10,000 for the fellowship period

Requirements for research proposals

The research can span a broad range of natural and social science disciplines, including (but not limited to): animal behavior, anthropology, ecology, geography, marine biology, conservation biology, economics, and public policy.

Research proposals must address at least two of the following key areas:

  • Socio-environmental external stressors as drivers of change
  • Factors influencing adaptive capacity or resilience
  • Adaptive strategies or responses to environmental changes

All proposals must also be:

  • Use-inspired: Relevant to solving real-world environmental challenges
  • Inclusive: Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI) component

Application Requirements

When applying, make sure you have the following materials ready to make the application process go easy:

  • A detailed research proposal, including a one-page summary and a five-page project description outlining objectives, hypotheses, experimental design, and broader impacts.
  • A one-page information sheet about the proposed external advisor and their institution.
  • A budget (maximum $10,000 research allowance).
  • A curriculum vitae (CV).
  • A one-page diversity statement reflecting views on promoting diversity and inclusion in scientific research.
  • Two letters of reference (not from proposed advisors).
  • Designation of a primary research advisor from STRI (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute) or NMNH (National Museum of Natural History), and a secondary advisor from another institution or Smithsonian unit.
