Volvo Environment Prize 2021

The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded for: “Outstanding innovations or scientific discoveries, which in broad terms fall within the environmental field.”

Since its inception in 1990, the Volvo Environment Prize has become one of the scientific world’s most respected environmental awards.

Rewarding outstanding scientific discoveries or innovations

The Volvo Environment Prize is an independent Foundation instituted in 1988 with the purpose of rewarding outstanding scientific discoveries or innovations which in broad terms fall within the environmental field. A Scientific Committee does the initial screening and evaluation of candidates.

The International Prize Jury, a group of internationally renowned scientists, makes the final selection of laureate or laureates.

The laureates represent a wide span of knowledge and areas of importance for the environment. Previous laureates include economists, biologists, urban development experts, resource and hazard specialists, poverty adversaries and others who are exploring the path to a sustainable world.

More than 40 scientists have received the award since 1990. Two of the laureates later won the Nobel Prize.

The prize

The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded annually. The Prize consists of a hand-crafted diploma, a glass sculpture and a cash award for SEK 1.5 million (approximately EUR 140,000 or USD 150,000). The award ceremony is in Stockholm in November each year.
