Seeking for a job
If you’re ambitious, you know what it’s like to want to build a resume stacked with well-known companies.
While you’re building your career, it can be intimidating to put companies like GE, PwC and Mars at the top of your dream job list.
All you can imagine is hoards of post-grads, clamoring over each other to land coveted entry-level positions.
Here’s what you might not realize: large impressive companies are at the top of job hunters’ lists for a reason.
And it’s not just because of the street cred. It’s also because of the way these companies have invested in staff members.
The advantages of being 20 and a job seeker
Today’s young job seeker is so much luckier than past generations
If you stop looking through Snap stories for a second, consider that technology has created millions of new businesses, as well as highly specialized jobs across a multitude of industries.
Sure, that makes the demand (and the competition) much more fierce – fiercer than the competition on “The Bachelor,” at times.
Competition aside, companies are literally pouring millions of dollars into their employee well-being programs and marketing to drive continuous interest from the job-seeking cream of the crop.
Here’s a slightly jarring figure: by 2020, Millennials will make up 75 percent of the workforce.
So you can probably imagine why these big companies are trying so hard to be “hip” and cater to the masses of young candidates.
HR directors continue to make exciting changes to entice Millennials to apply for jobs and work for them.
No, your parents probably didn’t have a nap room in their offices and they definitely weren’t allowed to take “inspiration days” either.
Debra Tenenbaum, Chief People Officer at Yapstone, a payment technology startup, knows how important it is to attract young job seekers.
“There’s no better time than now to ensure companies are developing an environment where Millennials can thrive”
When you’re on the job hunt, it’s easy to feel powerless. It’s true, you do have a lot of competition. Don’t let that deter you, though, because you have power as a Millennial.
Don’t let that deter you, though, because you have power as a Millennial.
Companies of all sizes are also clamoring over each other to get the best Millennial employees on their teams
Just remember that next time you take a break from Instagram to scroll through jobs on LinkedIn.
YapStone, which made the INC 5000 List of Fastest Growing Companies for the 9th year in a row, is just one example of a company that’s working hard to attract 20something team members.
For example, they’re dedicated to career mobility and provide constant development opportunities according to Tenenbaum, which is more than aware of what Millennials value in a workplace.
Obviously, that’s not all. Employees have the opportunity to teach their coworkers at “teach and learn” brown bag sessions.
YapStone is also a green company, committed to improving the environment and its community by offering volunteer programs for employees.
It recently introduced a flexible paid time off policy. It is been adopted by many companies because they know tired staffers just don’t do put out quality work.
People are paying attention to what you want in the workplace because they want YOU
If you’re in your 20’s and looking for an amazing gig at a company that actually cares about you, you’re in luck.
Maybe you’re not on the job hunt right now. But the moment you start feeling antsy at work or just want a change of pace will come.
Then you should look for companies that offer benefits outside of insurance. Make sure they align with your values.
Outside of flexible time off, volunteer initiatives and teaching/learning opportunities.
Companies that get it offer education stipends, better training programs, more frequent reviews and remote working opportunities.
The key takeaway is that you have more options than you think, even if you’re just joining the workforce. You don’t have to settle.
